Air Monitoring

Workplace Air Quality Monitoring, Surveys and Assessments; Personal Air Sampling.

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) place responsibility on employers to ensure that the exposure of their employees to hazardous substances is prevented, or if this is not reasonably practical, adequately controlled, and all control measures are properly assessed and maintained. To ensure compliance with these Regulations, a risk assessment of the hazards must be made, in order that the correct means of control can be specified. (Regulation 6)

Workplace Monitoring of hazardous substances enables compliance with COSHH regulation 10:

The employer shall ensure that the exposure of employees to substances hazardous to health is monitored in accordance with a suitable procedure.

Workplace Air Quality Monitoring

We carry out thorough workplace hazardous gas, fume and dust monitoring (COSHH regulation 10) with comprehensive reports and recommendations, to meet British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) and HSE guidelines. We are equipped with the latest sampling and testing methods (Dust /Aerosol, VOC-PID monitoring equipment, personal air sampling pumps, impingement and sampling tubes), analysis is carried out by UKAS accredited laboratories.

Many operations can result in exposure to a wide variety of hazardous substances in the workplace, which can cause ill-health. Inhalation is a major exposure route and can include dusts, fumes, vapours, fibres, gases and micro-organisms amongst others. Depending upon the substance and the extent of exposure, employees can experience a wide range of adverse health effects potentially leading to a variety of diseases. The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 places a duty on the employer to assess and appropriately control any risk of employee ill-health arising from exposure to hazardous substances; Workplace Monitoring of hazardous substances, enables compliance with COSHH regulation 10.

The workplace monitoring we carry out, will indicate the extent of exposure occurring and highlight the effectiveness of any control measures in place. The results are subsequently compared with relevant exposure limits and interpreted to determine the need for improvements. Survey reports include:

Advice on the Risk assessment process (design, training, implementation, auditing) and Carrying out an analysis/assessment for substances hazardous to health.

Determine whether any exposure to hazardous substances poses a serious risk to health from inhalation of the substance and to check exposure limits applicable.

Detailed analysis /description of work being carried out at the time of sampling Exposure monitoring results for dusts, fumes, gases, vapours etc. and comparison against relevant exposure limits and guidelines.
Assist in producing COSHH assessments, with the right control measures;

Assessment of existing control measures; LEV plant, general ventilation, Respirable Protective Equipment RPE etc. and detail if improvements may be required;

Air Monitoring

Sampling Methods Include

Personal Air Sampling in operators breathing zone. Spot / Area sampling, for general or background measurements, to show spread of contaminant; entry to a confined space; for breathing air quality etc.

We have carried out workplace monitoring for a wide range of hazardous substances, ranging from:

  • Dusts and mists:
  • Crystalline silica, welding fume, oil mists, heavy metals, chromium, cadmium, machining coolant mists, solder fume.
  • Gases and vapours:
  • Carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, toluene, VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds), Isocyanates.
  • Isocyanates exposure monitoring 1
